GETTING READY

If you're looking for some helpful hints, here's all you need to get started!

  • A five-gallon bucket and/or containers of other sizes (yogurt container, waste bin, etc.).
  • A tool to tamp down snow (a pot, a second bucket, a garden hoe, etc.).
  • A spoon, butter knife and/or other carving tools.
  • Snow- any consistency works!

How do all of these materials come together? Matt Morris, the Canadian community snow sculptor who runs Snowbank Productions and is this year's Grand Prize judge, explains in his YouTube video.

In only a few words, fill your bucket with non-packing snow, tamp it down, flip it over and leave it to ''sinter'' for at least two hours. Once the snow has settled, you can easily move and carve the blocks of snow.
