Highland Dancing Championships
The Maritime Closed Highland Dance Championship and February Fling Competition will be held at the Riverview East School with over 150 dancers participating from across the Maritimes. This event is hosted by the Dunnett School of Highland Dance and the Moncton-Riverview Highland Dance Association. Highland dance developed in the Scottish Highlands in the 19th century and is performed in modern times at festivals, Highland Games, and competitions such as this one. It requires strength, precision, and stamina with intricate footwork as well as arm and hand movements. Dancers are judged individually in events such as this.
The most advanced, premier-level dancers will be competing in Highland Fling, Sword Dance, Seann Triubhas and Strathspey and Highland Reel classes on Saturday morning in the Maritime Championship.
The afternoon will see some of the same dances performed in competitive classes divided by age (4 years and up) and experience level (Primary to Intermediate) in the 12th annual February Fling Competition.
These events are open to the public. The Maritime Championship will run from about 9:00 to noon, and the February Fling competition will run throughout the afternoon.
Admission: $5 for adults; no charge for youth 12 and under
