The Town of Riverview is seeking candidates for the summer student position of Outdoor Recreation Programmer with the Department of Parks, Recreation & Community Relations from May 20, 2025, to August 22, 2025.
The selected candidate is responsible for leading and assisting with planning, organizing, implementation and evaluation of activities related to outdoor recreation programming.
Part I - Characteristic Duties / Responsibilities:
Assist and lead in the development of Community Outdoor Educational Programming and workshops designed to support intergenerational learning, encourage citizens to connect with nature and use active transportation.
Identify and build partnerships with local interest groups, individuals and organizations within the active, outdoor recreation and environmental science sector.
Participate in summer program planning, offer creative and unique ideas for outdoor recreation activities to engage all ages; adapt activities to meet the needs of all participants.
Organize and operate all projects within the budgeted funds.
Supervise and guide program participants throughout all outdoor recreation activities, including cycling and trail building (training is provided). Ensure all activities are carried out safely.
Follow the guidelines provided by Southeast New Brunswick Regional Food Pledge, as they pertain to programming.
Foster positive interactions between staff and program participants and resolve disputes.
Ensure the Community Recreation Coordinator is informed immediately of any major concerns.
Prepare and distribute newsletters, letters, posters, flyers and other means of communication (including Facebook and other social media) to increase awareness and participation.
Evaluate program success through surveys, social media participation and event attendance.
Adhere to the policies, practices and procedures of the Town of Riverview.
Understand and explain the policies, practices and procedures of the Town of Riverview to the general public
Demonstrate and maintain a high standard of professional conduct at all times
Establish and maintain a good relationship with program participants, the public, volunteers and co-workers.
Use problem solving skills but seek assistance when necessary.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Community Recreation Coordinator.
Part II - Job Requirements:
- Be between 16 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period.
- Completed minimum of one (1) year of post-secondary education.
- Must have a valid New Brunswick Class 5 Driver’s License.
- Familiarity with Town of Riverview policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
- Proven leadership and supervisory roles through work experience, volunteer positions, membership in organizations, etc.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer and social media.
- Excellent planning, organizational and time management skills.
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills; ability to effectively work with the public.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Certification in Workplace CPR/ First Aid. Proof of Workplace First Aid and CPR/AED certification must be provided at least two weeks prior to the position start date.
- Knowledge of Canva, an asset.
Certification in HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development, an asset.
Part III - Working Conditions:
Required to work some evenings, some weekends and holidays (including Canada Day).
Required to work both indoors and outdoors and may be exposed to elements of nature, extreme heat conditions and sun exposure.
Position is considered student employment with a defined term.
This is a Full-Time summer student position with a rate of pay of $17.35 for 35 hours per week.
