- As part of the Corporate Communications report, new lighting infrastructure was announced. The Town now has the capability to change the lighting on the “RIVERVIEW” sign behind Town Hall to coincide with celebrations, events, and awareness campaigns in our community. Requests can be submitted at townofriverview.ca/riverviewsign and are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Council passed a recommendation that the Committee of the Whole recommend to Town Council to accept the Sports Wall of Fame Class of 2025 Inductees as follows: Mike Miller, Andrew Mitton (posthumous), and Peter Stuart.
OTHER BUSINESS
- The March Grant Report included recommendations to award the following grants:
- The Indian Cultural Association of NB Kite Festival in the amount of $500
- MAGMA in the amount of $5,000
- The Greater Moncton Music Festival in the amount of $500.
- A request to amend the Council Compensation By-Law was defeated 4-3. Currently, the year before a municipal election a committee of residents is appointed by the Mayor to work with a consultant to review Council’s compensation. The committee brings a recommendation forward for the fall budget deliberations and any changes to Council’s compensation would only take effect upon the swearing in of a new Council the following year. The proposed amendment would have added a change for when the province requires Council to serve a five-year term, which is currently underway, where the compensation committee would make a compensation recommendation to take effect in the fifth year — and so would come into effect in May of 2025 instead of waiting for the next Council to be elected (2026). Mayor LeBlanc opted to vacate his seat as Chair for the remainder of this agenda item to be able to participate in the debate and express his opposition to the motion. It was noted that Riverview Council's compensation did not change when municipal reform took place as it had for most other municipalities because Riverview’s boundaries did not change and were not amalgamated into new areas or Local Service Districts. However, as per the Compensation By-Law, the members of Council have received annual CPI increases throughout their term. Read the full council report form on our website, or watch the meeting recording to hear the arguments brought forward.
