Public Service Announcement - Phone Scam Alert

It has come to our attention that a few residents have recently received suspicious phone calls requesting donations on behalf of the Fire Department. These callers have specifically asked for credit card information over the phone.

Please be advised that the Town of Riverview and Riverview Fire and Rescue will NEVER solicit donations over the phone or ask residents to share unsolicited personal or financial information. While the Fire Department does conduct fundraising initiatives, they are always done in person—for example, through our well-known "Fill the Boot" drive for Muscular Dystrophy.

If you receive a call requesting donations on behalf of the Fire Department or any other Town service:

  • Do not provide any personal or financial information.
  • Hang up immediately.
  • Spread the word to friends and neighbors — especially those who may be more vulnerable to such scams.

How to Protect Yourself from Phone Scams

  • Never give out personal information (like your name, address, or banking details) over the phone unless you are certain of the caller’s identity.
  • Don’t be afraid to say “no” and hang up.
  • Be cautious of callers who pressure you or offer deals that seem “too good to be true.”
  • If the call seems suspicious, trust your instincts—end the call and contact the organization directly through verified channels.

The Town would like to thank the residents who came forward to report this concerning scam.

How to Report Suspicious Calls

If you believe you have received a fraudulent call, report it to the National Do Not Call List and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. Visit the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) website for more info.

Let’s continue to work together to keep our community informed and safe.
