Elected in December 2024, Richard Blackstock is serving his first term as a councillor for Ward 1. Alongside his duties to Council, Richard is currently a Victim Services Coordinator in the Southeast New Brunswick region. He has worked for the Department of Justice and Public Safety since 2015 and was part of the Family Information Liaison Unit (FILU) for the Missing Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) Inquiry in February 2018. From September 2018 to 2019 Richard had a one-year secondment position as Youth Probation Officer. Richard was able to see firsthand the impact, challenges and complexities addictions and mental health has on young offenders.
Richard grew up in the Greater London area of England and has lived in Riverview since 2011 with his wife, Andra Phillips (who is from Riverview) and his dog, Poppy. Richard says that back in 2011 he was welcomed with kindness and open arms, and he would now like to repay that generosity back to the community. He says that his family chose to settle in Riverview for the friendly community, the proximity to nature, and the great potential the region has to offer.
Passionate about citizen involvement, Richard was a committee member on the Riverview Civic Engagement Committee between 2016 and 2018 helping with the implementation of live streaming services for Riverview Council meetings. He volunteered for the Canadian Red Cross (CRC) Disaster Response Team and was named Riverview Volunteer of the Year for the CRC in 2012. He currently sits on the Public Safety Advisory Committee (PSAC) dealing with safety issues in the Riverview, Moncton and Dieppe areas. He is also currently involved with the Friends of Mill Creek Nature Park Committee and played a key advocacy role in the recent acquisition of land to expand the park.
